In the high-stakes arena of Hollywood awards season, few moments are as legendary—or as biting—as the opening monologues of the Golden Globes. But while audiences at home often forget the zingers by the time the credits roll, it appears that James Cameron, the visionary behind Titanic and Avatar, has a memory as long and deep as the Mariana Trench. Twelve years after Amy Poehler took a legendary swipe at his personal life, Cameron has finally fired back, labeling the comedian’s remarks as an “ignorant dig” that fundamentally disrespected the art of filmmaking.

The controversy dates back to the 70th Annual Golden Globes in 2013. Poehler, co-hosting with Tina Fey, turned her razor-sharp wit toward Kathryn Bigelow’s Best Director nomination for Zero Dark Thirty, a film heavily scrutinized for its depiction of the CIA’s use of “enhanced interrogation” techniques.
“I haven’t really been following the controversy over Zero Dark Thirty,” Poehler quipped to a star-studded room that included the industry’s most powerful players.
“But when it comes to torture, I trust the lady who spent three years married to James Cameron.”
The joke landed like a bombshell, eliciting a mixture of shocked gasps and uproarious laughter from Cameron’s peers. At the time, Cameron remained silent, but in a recent, expansive interview with The New York Times, the 71-year-old filmmaker made it clear that the wound never truly healed.

“Amy Poehler’s remark was an ignorant dig, at an event which is supposed to be a celebration of cinema and filmmakers, not a roast,” Cameron stated with the bluntness that has become his trademark.
“I’m pretty thick-skinned, and happy to be the butt of a good-natured joke, but that went too far.”
For Cameron, the sting didn’t just come from the punchline itself, but from the reaction it triggered within the Beverly Hilton ballroom. To him, the laughter was an indictment of his reputation. “The fact that people found it funny shows exactly what they think of me, even though they have no idea who I am or how I work,” he lamented.
The “torture” reference likely alluded to Cameron’s notorious reputation for being an exacting, “autocratic” taskmaster on set. Tales from the production of The Abyss and Aliens are the stuff of Hollywood legend, with cast members famously wearing T-shirts that read, “You can’t scare me, I work for Jim Cameron.”
While Cameron has admitted in recent years that he “could’ve listened more” and “been less autocratic,” he clearly draws a line at having his personal relationships characterized as a grueling ordeal.
Cameron and Bigelow were married from 1989 to 1991, a brief but intense union between two of the most formidable directors in history. Their professional respect survived their divorce; they even faced off in the 2010 awards season when Bigelow’s The Hurt Locker famously beat Cameron’s Avatar for Best Picture and Best Director. Reflecting on that era, Cameron noted, “I was the first one on my feet applauding” when his ex-wife won.
He further revealed that the “meta-narrative” created by the media regarding their rivalry was something they both initially found amusing, but it eventually soured.
“I was a little concerned that it would just take away from her credibility as a filmmaker. It started to turn into a conversation that wasn’t about her film, and that bothered both of us,” Cameron said, describing Bigelow as a “remarkable person.”

The director’s decision to reignite this feud now, as he promotes the upcoming Avatar: Fire and Ash, has sent shockwaves through the industry. Some see it as a man finally standing up for his character, while others view it as a symptom of a massive ego that cannot let a twelve-year-old joke go. The Reddit community Fauxmoi has already exploded with debate, with one user noting, “He’ll never let go,” while others argue that the joke was a “mild” reflection of his well-documented on-set behavior.

As the 2026 awards season approaches, Cameron’s comments serve as a stern warning to future hosts: the “King of the World” is watching, he’s listening, and he has no intention of being the punchline of a roast ever again. Whether Amy Poehler—currently a Golden Globe nominee herself for her podcast venture—will offer a response remains to be seen, but the battle lines in Hollywood have been officially redrawn. The man who gave us the “I see you” mantra is now making sure the world sees him on his own terms.
