An ideological battle for the direction of the American conservative movement has spilled into public view, with accusations of extremism and betrayal traded between some of its most prominent media figures. The conflict, which pits far-right influencer Laura Loomer against former Fox News host Tucker Carlson, exposes a deepening rift within the “America First” political sphere, raising questions about its core principles and future identity.
The latest and most volatile flashpoint in this ongoing feud occurred this week when Loomer accused Carlson of attempting to convert the Republican Party into a “modern-day Hitler Youth.” The inflammatory charge was prompted by Carlson’s recent podcast episode featuring Representative Matt Gaetz. During the interview, Gaetz alleged that he and his family were the targets of an extortion plot involving an agent of the Israeli government, a claim denied by the individual named, former Israeli consulate contractor Jake Novak. “It was an op to silence me, and Israel was involved, and I hate to say that,” Gaetz stated on the show.

Loomer, who is Jewish and a vocal Zionist, interpreted the segment as part of a disturbing pattern. She had previously condemned Carlson for an interview with white nationalist Nick Fuentes, and she viewed the Gaetz episode as further confirmation of what she describes as a hostile takeover of the MAGA movement. “I told you this is what Tucker was doing,” she wrote on social media. “He’s trying to have a hostile takeover of the GOP to destroy MAGA & redefine the GOP into modern-day Hitler youth with a drizzle of Sharia Law on top.” Loomer asserted that Carlson’s agenda was not “America First” but “Tucker First at the expense of our country.”
This war of words is symptomatic of a larger “MAGA civil war” that became starkly visible at the recent Turning Point USA conference. The event, intended to unify the conservative base, instead showcased its fractures. Onstage, Carlson engaged in a widely publicized, contentious debate with conservative commentator Ben Shapiro over issues of conspiracy theories and antisemitism within the movement.
In the fallout, Loomer has also targeted other conservative figures she believes are aligning with Carlson’s ideological shift. She called out Pizzagate conspiracy theorist Jack Posobiec for unfollowing her on the social media platform X after her attacks on Carlson. Loomer framed the schism as a fight for the moral compass of the party. “Remember when the GOP had standards and wasn’t a place for Hardcore Nazis and Hamas lovers?” she lamented, questioning the movement’s direction since the death of Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk.
Loomer’s campaign against Carlson is not new. For over a year, she has positioned herself as a “loyalty enforcer” for former President Donald Trump, working to diminish what she sees as Carlson’s dangerous influence over Trump and his base. Previously, after Carlson criticized American involvement in a conflict between Israel and Iran, Loomer accused him of being financially “controlled by Muslims” through Qatar. Carlson’s business partner swiftly dismissed the claim as “a lie.”
For his part, Carlson has largely refrained from engaging directly with Loomer’s specific accusations, instead choosing to characterize her behavior as immature and attention-seeking. He has publicly likened her to a “child wielding a loaded firearm called Twitter,” stating that he does not blame her but rather “the adults who take her seriously.”
The dispute has pushed Loomer to a point of concession with her political opponents, a rare move in today’s polarized climate. Reflecting on the rise of extremist rhetoric, she posted that “maybe some of those Democrats were right when they called some people on the so called right Nazis,” calling the presence of a “Neo-Nazi problem on the right” undeniable. She issued a stark warning that if the GOP does not address these elements, it faces the prospect of significant electoral defeats in 2026 and 2028.
As these internal battles rage, the conflict between Loomer and Carlson serves as a microcosm of a movement struggling to define itself. The core of their dispute revolves around fundamental questions of loyalty, influence, and the very definition of what it means to be a conservative in modern America. This public reckoning forces observers and participants alike to confront where the boundaries of acceptable discourse lie, a debate that touches upon the essential values of political accountability and ideological trust.
