WASHINGTON D.C. — In a moment that has gripped the nation with a mix of profound sorrow and steely resolve, Secretary of War Pete Hegseth delivered a stunning and emotional update regarding the two National Guard members who were targeted in a shooting incident in the nation’s capital. The tragedy, which occurred near Farragut Square, has prompted an immediate and forceful response from the Department of War, including the deployment of hundreds of additional troops to secure the streets of Washington.

A Cowardly Ambush on America’s Best
The incident took place on November 26, when two members of the West Virginia National Guard were shot while conducting duties as part of the “Safe and Beautiful” mission in Washington, D.C. The shooting claimed the life of U.S. Army National Guard Specialist Sarah Beckstrom, a 20-year-old military police soldier from Summersville, West Virginia, assigned to the 863rd Military Police Company.
Critically wounded in the same attack was U.S. Air National Guard Staff Sergeant Andrew Wolfe, 24, of Martinsburg, West Virginia, who serves with the 167th Force Support Squadron.
Secretary Hegseth, who was in the Dominican Republic meeting with senior leadership when the news broke, immediately addressed the “cowardly, dastardly act targeting the best of America.” Upon his return, he visited the D.C. Armory to speak directly with the troops, offering a raw and haunting reflection on the cost of service.
“Obviously our hearts are heavy right now for the loss of Spc. Sarah Beckstrom,” Hegseth told the assembled soldiers. “Some of you may have known her, obviously a beautiful human being and a great American willing to serve her country. She was brutally targeted, ambushed, on the street. There are no words for the sadness we have for her family. We pray for them. We also pray for Staff Sgt. Andrew Wolfe with the Air National Guard, in a fight for his life right now.”
“It Will Not Stand”
The update provided by the Secretary was not just one of mourning, but of operational escalation. Acknowledging the tragedy, Hegseth announced that President Donald J. Trump had directed the deployment of 500 additional National Guard troops to Washington, D.C. This surge in personnel is intended to reinforce the existing task force and ensure the safety of both the public and the service members protecting them.
“It will not stand,” Hegseth declared with visible intensity. “If criminals want to conduct things like this — violence against America’s best — we will never back down.”
The Secretary emphasized that the mission in D.C. has already resulted in a “historic” drop in crime since the National Guard was deployed in August. He noted that the presence of these soldiers has delivered safety not just for the residents who deserve a better life, but for all Americans visiting their capital to see its monuments and history.
Honoring the Sacrifice
During his visit to the D.C. Guard, Secretary Hegseth also took time to meet privately with two individuals who helped subdue the suspect, Rahmanullah Lakanwal, who was subsequently arrested. The Secretary’s engagement with the troops highlighted the personal nature of his leadership style; as a former National Guard infantry officer himself, Hegseth’s connection to the soldiers was palpable.
He led the troops in prayer for Beckstrom’s family and Wolfe’s recovery, reinforcing the bond of “eternal brotherhood” cited by White House Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller, who also addressed the formation.
“You have delivered safety, and you’ve done it selflessly, and you’ve done it courageously,” Hegseth affirmed. “We are nothing but grateful for everything that you do every single day and every single night, and for every single risk that you’re willing to take.”
A Continuing Vigilance
Currently, more than 2,200 National Guard personnel are assigned to the Joint Task Force District of Columbia. The force includes approximately 925 members from the D.C. National Guard, with over 1,300 additional troops hailing from states including Georgia, Mississippi, Alabama, Louisiana, West Virginia, Ohio, and South Carolina.
The arrival of 500 more guardsmen marks a significant escalation in the federal government’s approach to securing the capital. Secretary Hegseth made it clear that the administration is paying close attention to the situation on the ground, with information flowing directly from the Pentagon to the White House.
As Staff Sergeant Wolfe continues his battle for recovery in a local hospital, the words of the Secretary hang in the air as a solemn reminder of the stakes involved in domestic operations. The tragic loss of Specialist Beckstrom serves as a poignant testament to the risks faced by those who wear the uniform, even on American soil.
The Department of War has pledged to maintain its vigilance, ensuring that the sacrifice made by these two West Virginia heroes leads to a renewed commitment to law and order in the capital. The “Safe and Beautiful” mission continues, now with a heavier heart and a fortified resolve.
