BONDI BEACH, NSW – Authorities have officially identified the police officer who brought the deadly confrontation at Bondi Beach to a halt as Detective Senior Constable Cesar Barraza.
The identification has brought immediate attention to the remarkable tactical response executed during the chaos on Sunday evening. Detective Barraza, a veteran of the force with 16 years of experience, is credited with neutralizing the attackers, Sajid and Naveed Akram, preventing what officials believe would have been an even greater loss of life during the Hanukkah celebrations.

The “Impossible” Shot
New details regarding the engagement have stunned ballistics experts and law enforcement personnel alike. According to police reports, Detective Barraza was on duty and dressed in business attire—a shirt and tie—when the incident began. Racing toward the sound of gunfire near the Bondi Pavilion, he took a defensive position behind a tree.
From this vantage point, Barraza engaged the two gunmen positioned on a footbridge. The distance between the officer and the targets was approximately 40 meters.
The detective was armed with a standard-issue Glock pistol. Technical specifications and police training guidelines generally cite the effective accuracy of this weapon at close quarters, typically up to 10 meters. Successfully hitting a target at four times that distance, while under fire and surrounded by fleeing civilians, is a feat being described by colleagues as the “shot of a lifetime.”
While forensic teams are finalizing their report to confirm that Barraza’s shot was the specific round that killed 50-year-old Sajid Akram, there is little doubt among investigators that his precise marksmanship ended the immediate threat. Barraza has since provided a statement to critical incident investigators and body-worn camera footage is being reviewed to analyze the split-second decision-making process.

A History of Service
For Detective Barraza, the path to this moment began nearly two decades ago. He was previously a member of the cybercrime squad before moving to the Bondi command. However, he is perhaps best recognized by the public for his participation in the 2000s reality television series “Recruits.”
The show, which documented the training of new officers, captured a young Barraza stating his motivation for joining the police force. When asked why he signed up, his answer was stark and simple: “Because I hate crime.” That sentiment was put into definitive action on Sunday as he moved toward danger while others fled.

Injured Officers Face Difficult Recovery The police response, while effective in stopping the shooters, came at a high cost. Two other officers, Constable Scott Dyson and Probationary Constable Jack Hibbert, sustained severe injuries and remain hospitalized.
Constable Hibbert, who was already on patrol at the beach when the shooting started, was struck while attempting to evacuate members of the public. A heart-wrenching statement from the Hibbert family outlined the extent of his injuries.
“Jack was taken to ICU where he was intubated and underwent multiple surgeries,” the family stated. “Although miraculously surviving, Jack’s injuries have resulted in a loss of vision in one of his eyes.”
The family confirmed that shrapnel caused irreversible damage to the nerves behind his eye, and he now faces a long road of surgeries and rehabilitation.
Constable Dyson, a talented water polo player who has represented Australia, was allegedly shot in the shoulder and abdomen. He has served in the eastern suburbs command for 18 months and was reportedly targeted by Naveed Akram using a high-powered rifle.

Attackers’ Deception and Background
As the community rallies around the injured officers, investigators are piecing together the timeline of the attackers, Sajid and Naveed Akram. It has been revealed that the father and son employed deception to hide their intentions from their own family.
Venera Akram, the wife of Sajid and mother of Naveed, told police she believed the pair had gone fishing in Jervis Bay. Instead, they had checked into a short-stay rental in Campsie before driving a silver Hyundai Elantra to Bondi Beach.
They arrived just before 6:40 pm, emerging near Archer Park with rifles and extra ammunition strapped to their bodies. From the bridge, they opened fire on the crowds, killing 15 people and injuring 42 others.
Intelligence reports have also confirmed that the pair traveled to the Philippines in the weeks leading up to the attack. This international travel is now a primary focus for counter-terrorism teams determining if the men were influenced by foreign extremist networks.
Naveed Akram, 24, was wounded during the exchange with police. He regained consciousness on Tuesday night after being in a coma for 48 hours and remains under heavy police guard in the hospital.
